My name is Daniel Sagerman and I am a two-time graduate of Northwestern University, earning my Master’s degree in Sports Administration in March 2019 and my BA in Economics and Business Institutions in 2017. My professional goal is a front-office career with a professional sports franchise.
Above all else, I live and breathe sports. But I don’t let sports define me. What defines me is this:
I am the ultimate underdog.
I have overcome some insurmountable odds in my life. At age three, I was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma. I underwent numerous surgeries, radiation treatments, and chemotherapy treatment – all with a 15% chance of survival. I beat it. Daniel 1, Cancer 0.
Fast forward to 2008, where just before finishing seventh grade, I became ill once again. This time, I was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome and required a stem cell transplant. Luckily, my brother was a perfect match and I was able to receive the transplant and subsequent chemotherapy. Once again, I overcame the odds. Daniel 2, Cancer 0.
Overcoming cancer did not come without its lifelong side effects. I must manage both hearing loss and diabetes. But I don’t let these challenges hold me back. I’m stronger than that. I pride myself on being a self-advocate and am not afraid to ask for help when I need it. My experiences as a cancer survivor have enabled me to develop a strong work ethic and unique perspective on life.
I am fortunate to have gone on to do great things since defeating pediatric cancer twice. I graduated high school with honors, and went on to attend my dream college. I earned a Master’s degree at age 23. I’ve gained incredible experience through summer internships. In the Northwestern Athletic Department, I’ve developed the communication skills necessary to thrive in the industry. I have worked alongside some of the best and brightest people in sports, and am eager to bring my passion and expertise to the industry.
We all have stories to tell – whether we’re cancer survivors, graduate students, business leaders, college athletic departments, or professional sports organizations – and people want to hear them.
I can’t wait to get started.
